The Augmented Theatre in Virtualised Society: See You in Walhalla

In this article I explore the fusion of real and virtual space in the performance of See You in Walhalla which is inspired by the virtual game Second Life. Developing further the notion of virtual theatre as defined by Gabriella Giannachi (in her landmark Virtual Theatre: An Introduction), I will discuss the reality-virtuality continuum focusing on mixed-reality experience which breaches the delimitation of the real and the virtual, creating an augmented performance space. I tend to classify See You in Walhalla as ‘augmented theatre’ thereby emphasizing its remediated features, specifically augmentation and immersion.
